The Road to the Prize |The Agroecological Food Futures Prize 2024

“Agroecology is the only way forward.”

These words encapsulate the essence of an idea that has the potential to redefine the future of food systems. Agroecology is not just a set of practices; it is a holistic approach that integrates ecological principles into agriculture, ensuring sustainability, resilience, and equitable growth.

The Agroecological Food Futures Prize (AFFP) aimed to shine a spotlight on this forward-thinking concept while celebrating East African enterprises that embody its principles. Hosted in Kigali, Rwanda, the event brought together innovators, stakeholders, and thought leaders, all united by a shared mission to promote agroecology as a viable solution to the challenges facing global food systems.

Impact Hub Kigali had the privilege of playing a role in preparing the finalists for their moment in the spotlight. From engaging masterclasses to personalized coaching sessions, the pitch preparation journey was a collaborative effort designed to help participants refine their ideas and effectively communicate their impact.

The process reached its peak during mock pitch sessions on December 2nd, where the finalists received valuable feedback in an environment specifically designed to allow re-iteration and refinement. By the time the pitch day arrived, it was clear that the finalists were ready. Each presentation demonstrated the innovative ways agroecology can address real-world issues, from pest control to food security and biodiversity.

The event celebrated three exceptional enterprises. Plant Biodefenders from Tanzania earned the top prize for their eco-friendly pest control solutions, including the Vuruga Biocide. This product protects crops while preserving beneficial pollinators, offering a practical and sustainable solution for farmers. The company also produces herbal teas, adding value to their agroecological approach.

AgriTech Analytics Limited from Kenya secured second place. Their technology-driven solutions integrate AI, IoT, and satellite data to provide smallholder farmers with precise insights into soil, weather, and crop health. This empowers farmers to make informed decisions, reduce risks, and enhance productivity.

In third place, Apiculture Venture Limited, also from Kenya, stood out for its dedication to sustainable beekeeping. Their modern equipment, training programs, and processing services help farmers increase hive productivity, improve incomes, and support environmental balance.

While these winners were celebrated, the contributions of other finalists—Goshen Farm Exporters, Kayyan & Kyobijja Farm, and Trapro Coffee—were equally noteworthy. Each enterprise represented the diverse and innovative ways agroecology is taking root across East Africa.

The panel discussion, a key highlight of the event, provided a platform for industry experts to share insights. Panelists explored topics such as the importance of originality in business models, the need for larger investment funds, and the challenges of scaling agroecological practices. The conversation emphasized that agroecology is not just a theoretical concept but a practical framework for creating sustainable, impactful change in food systems.

The AFFP served as a reminder of the critical need for investment in agroecological enterprises. Beyond the prizes, the program connected businesses with donors, investors, and development opportunities to help them expand their impact. Over the coming year, Biovision will work closely with the winners to support their growth and document the ways in which agroecology can transform communities and ecosystems.

Impact Hub Kigali is proud to have supported this initiative, which not only celebrated innovation but also fostered a deeper understanding of agroecology as a path to a more sustainable future. The Agroecological Food Futures Prize underscored the power of collaboration and the importance of reimagining agriculture to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow.
