Did you know that zero waste is a cornerstone of the circular economy, starting at the design stage?
Our latest event _ Unlocking revenue with cost effective solutions _ brought together industry experts, entrepreneurs, and a passionate audience to discuss the power of cost-effective sustainability and circular solutions. The energy was high from the start, beginning with an interactive bingo game that got everyone excited! Two lucky winners took home Incuti Food gift bags, setting a fun tone for the meaningful discussions that followed.
We dove right into the panel discussion, kicking off with insights into cost-effectiveness. Elke Nijaman, the Rwanda country representative of the African Circular Economy Network. She emphasized how integrating sustainability into core operations — through new products or process innovations — can bring cost savings and environmental benefits.
Next, we heard from Tresor Gashonga of Incuti Foods on his journey to integrate circular practices. Tresor spoke about collecting and repurposing waste, notably used bottles, to reduce costs and minimize negative environmental impact. He explained how understanding the value a product brings to customers is essential, noting that Incuti Foods often offers incentives like a 5% discount, making sustainable choices more appealing to consumers.
Our panelists explored the challenges of implementing circular solutions, with Elke sharing advice on securing buy-in from decision-makers by framing recycling initiatives in terms of cost savings. She also highlighted how large companies have more resources to pilot innovative projects, but noted that any company can be a pioneer in the space, regardless of size.
Tresor underscored the importance of collaboration, and emphasized their commitment to sustainability despite challenges like packaging. Tresor also shared his vision for the future, predicting that as consumer demand grows for eco-friendly products, environmental considerations will become an essential part of every business model.
The discussion turned interactive as the audience joined in. One participant shared their perspective, noting that “the cheaper the product, the more costly it becomes long-term” — a reminder that low-cost choices today can lead to environmental expenses later. Panelists discussed the future of agroecology, biogas energy, organic fertilizers, and the potential revenue streams from these circular solutions.
Elke shared a personal story from her home country, the Netherlands, stressing the power of collaboration and the critical role of students in driving innovation. A member of the audience shared insights on biogas production as an example of a successful circular approach, demonstrating how one venture utilizes biogas to generate energy, organic fertilizers, and animal feed — turning waste into profitable resources.
As we wrapped up, participants tackled questions in a thought-provoking quiz on zero-waste concepts. Elke challenged us to rethink waste, reminding us that recycling is only part of a circular economy; striving for zero waste begins at the design stage. This holistic approach underscored the importance of compostable packaging, with an emphasis on making sustainable choices accessible and achievable.
This event highlighted the exciting future of cost-effective sustainability and inspired participants to take steps toward integrating circular economy practices in their businesses. Together, we can shape a future where profitability and environmental responsibility go hand in hand!
