What happens when innovation meets real-world challenges in food systems?

At our recent “Live Diagnostic Sessions,” we discovered just that. On August 14th, two trailblazing ventures—Afrifarmers and Zean—stepped into the spotlight, presenting their business challenges to an expert in a dynamic, problem-solving environment. The session, led by Antonio Magnaghi, CEO of Euro Ingredients Limited, brought fresh perspectives to the table, driving actionable solutions that can reshape the future of food systems.

Afrifarmers, founded by Norman Mugisha in 2020, has seen impressive growth. From supporting 15 farmers to around 7000 in just four years, the venture leverages technology to boost production and deliver fresh produce directly to consumers. During the session, discussions revolved around enhancing customer convenience by pre-packaging spinach, turning food waste into valuable resources, and refining their business model to maximize efficiency.

Zean, led by Enode Nduwayezu and founded in 2018, focuses on reducing post-harvest losses by processing bananas into chips and maize into flour. The session highlighted key solutions like transforming banana peels into fermented poultry feed and repurposing oil waste to power generators. By tackling issues head-on, Zean aims to create a more sustainable and profitable future in food processing.

Antonio Magnaghi’s expertise shone through as he guided the ventures in identifying circular business practices that not only reduce waste but also add value to their products. From practical tips like optimizing oil usage to larger concepts like understanding the full value chain, the session underscored the importance of a holistic approach to business.

The “Live Diagnostic Sessions” fostered a collaborative environment, enabling participants to engage in interactive discussions and drive innovation together. With insights from industry professionals and real-time problem-solving, the event provided a unique platform for ventures to refine their strategies and explore new opportunities.

As we continue to push the boundaries of food system innovation, we’re excited to see how Afrifarmers and Zean implement these solutions and contribute to a more sustainable future.
